Niche of the Virgin of Santa Catalina

The first modern image of the Virgin of Santa Catalina was placed at first in a niche located on the access road to El Pescante de Hermigua (Hermigua’s davit). The new and safer situation, in relation to dangers of the northern sea, is located in the neighborhood that has the same name and it also has privileged views of the sea, the davit, and the island of Tenerife. However, historical references to the presence of the image of Santa Catalina in the valldy of Hermigua date, at least, from the 16th century. Near this place, according to the chronicles, the conqueror of Gran Canaria, Juan Rejón, died in 1481. His festivity, celebrated in October, is taken as the end of the festive calendar of the municipality.
