Gatera

In the areas near the shepherds’ buildings, it was common to find structures made of stones and sometimes roofed with bushes, called gateras. These structures served as a refuge for the recently calved goats and their baifos (the name by which the baby goats are known), in order to avoid possible attacks by other animals.

It should be noted that the goat and its baifos were also protected from inclement weather, and sometimes, due to the size of the gatera, it was only possible to protect newborns. In this case the structures were called “toriles”.

The image shows a representation of the majorera goat. It is an indigenous breed of the island whose milk is used to make the well-known Majorero cheese, a cheese with a designation of origin that can be enjoyed tender, semi-cured or cured.
